This is a reminder to all Grade 8 students that the Grade 8 End of the Year Dance will be held Monday the 26th of June from 6-8pm at the school. This event is for Grade 8 students only and there is no fee. Drinks and snacks will be served and the dress attire is semi formal. This is a great opportunity for students to celebrate the end of their elementary education with friends.

The McCarthy Uniforn outlet at St Michael is open regular hours as usual during the school calendar. As for the extended hours - the Shop will be open from 5:30-8:00, Tuesday, May 23 and 3:30-6:00, Thursday, May 25. Customers must register online or by phone through McCarthy to make an appointment for a fitting. These appointments are mostly for new students who will be attending the school next year and are the ones who can really benefit from the May promotion. Course Information Guide
On Tuesday, Thomas Bares, Ashley Snippe, and Madeline Hubbard traveled to the Limerick Forest Interpretive Center for the Eastern Ontario Envirothon, and returned as winners. The crew from St. Mikes got a total of 59 out of a possible 60 points to beat eleven other teams at each of the four stations: Wetlands, Tree Identification, Species at Risk, and Forest Inventory.
They also got a chance to make Wood Duck hatching boxes to help the species build its numbers. Many thanks to the Limerick Forest Center staff and volunteers for making today a terrific event for everyone who attended.
Guidance is now ready to accept your 2017 grad fee of $45. This fee covers the cost of your gown rental, keepsake hat, tassle, and St. Michael diploma folder, and the reception taking place after the ceremony. Please pay Mrs. Grant in Student Services by cheque or with cash before the deadline of May 19th. Students should also be ready to give Mrs. Grant their height so that the appropriate length graduation gown can be ordered for them. For students who cannot attend the ceremony, there will be a small fee of $10. Guidance is asking parents and students to pay fees using the School Cash Online system.
As a scientist, broadcaster, author, coach and athlete, Dr. Greg Wells has dedicated his career to understanding human performance and how the human body responds to extreme conditions.
Dr. Wells is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto. He also serves as an associate scientist of physiology and experimental medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children. There, he and his team explore how to use exercise to prevent, diagnose and treat chronic illnesses in children.
Throughout his career, Dr. Wells has coached, trained and inspired dozens of elite athletes to win medals at World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. He has studied athletic performance in some of the most severe conditions on the planet, like the Andes Mountains and the Sahara Desert.
Dr. Wells has had his own experience with the challenges of adversity and human extremes. Late in his high school career, he broke his neck in a freak accident while swimming in the ocean and was in a halo brace before undergoing neurosurgery. Told by his doctor that he would never perform as an athlete again, he went on to compete at the international level in swimming. He has competed in events such as the Nanisivik Marathon - 600 miles north of the Arctic Circle - Ironman Canada, and the Tour D’Afrique, a grueling 11,000-kilometre event that is the longest bike race in the world.
Dr. Wells is a frequent contributor to The Globe and Mail and has been an expert source to other top media outlets like ABC News, “20/20,” The Discovery Channel, TSN, CBC and CTV. He also served as the sports medicine analyst for the Canadian Olympic Broadcast Consortium for the 2010 and 2012 Olympic Games.

St Michael students and staff were given a presentation this week on the dangers of opioids that are becoming prevalent with youth. We like to advise all parents and potential students that due to the weather forecasting more snow and increased winds, we have decided to reschedule the Gr. 7 & 9 Open House to next Tuesday, Feb. 21st from 6:30 to 8:00pm.
Starting Wednesday, February 8th, 2017, the Guidance department will begin My Blueprint sessions in the library with grades 8 through 11. These sessions will allow students to give their course choices for next year. Information from these sessions will be collected in order to create the appropriate amount of sections for particular courses and course levels so that next year’s timetable can be built. Students will be bringing home information sheets for parents to sign to approve choices. The choices being made during the My Blueprint sessions are only to garner interest in particular courses and will not constitute final choices for students. Once the timetable has been built, students will be able to choose their actual schedule for next year and parents will be able to give their final stamp of approval on this schedule.

Due to unpredictable weather tomorrow, the elementary skiing and skating trips will be rescheduled to Friday, February 10th.
Please ensure all students participating in the winter activity day be prepared with the proper attire… Winter coat and snow pant, toque, neck warmer, mitts. It is encouraged to bring extra layers as well in order to ensure every one stays warm and enjoys the day.

If your child is currently in Grade 12, you should know that applications are now open for college and university programs. The last date for university applications is January 11th. College applications for the fall term should be submitted before February 1st.
Your child may benefit from financial assistance for postsecondary education from the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). As part of the most significant reform of student assistance in North America, the government of Ontario is removing the financial barriers to attending college or university.
If your family income is under $50,000, your child’s tuition is covered. Even if you earn more, the new OSAP is still there to help with generous grants that will make sending your child to college or university more affordable.
The Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development has launched a new online calculator to help students and their families find out quickly and easily whether they qualify for free tuition or other grants and supports from the province. We encourage you to find out more at ontario.ca/osap.

Grade 12 students can come and pick up their PIN numbers for Ontario university applications in Guidance starting today.
The 22 Push Ups 22 Days challenge is simple – participants do 22 push ups for 22 days. Each day they share their efforts via a video posted on social media, and call upon a nominee to join in the challenge. The cause: to raise public awareness regarding PTSD. According to Wounded Warriors Canada, between 2004 and March 2014, 160 veterans committed suicide; which is greater than the total number of Canadian Armed Forces members killed during the war in Afghanistan. It is this staggering reality that led four individuals from Ottawa to create the challenge and to my subsequent nomination.
I am honoured to share this challenge with my amazing French Immersion Physical Education class. Our progress will be posted on the St. Michael’s Facebook page for 22 consecutive school days. PTSD affects a number of veterans and first responders and is something that many do not talk about because of pride, worry, shame or pain. Our class hopes to help raise national awareness, education and join the fundraising effort so that individuals suffering with these invisible injuries will get the help they require. Follow us, like us and join our challenge. Why?
Because one suicide, is one too many.
SMCHS Student Offered Hockey Scholarship to US College
St Michael student Lauren Bellefontaine’s hard work and perseverance paid off as the Grade 11 student was recently offered a hockey scholarship to Syracuse University, a Division One hockey powerhouse in New York State. The Kemptville native is presently a member of the Nepean Midget Wildcats AA team which plays in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League. An Honour Roll student at St. Michael, Lauren also excels on the soccer pitch and plans to focus on Math and Science in her post-secondary education. In 2016-17, the Loran Scholarship Foundation will offer up to 126 awards for high school students continuing on to post-secondary studies at selected Canadian Universities. Students must be in their final year of high school and present a minimum cumulative average of 85%. Interested students should check out the scholarship board in the Guidance Office or speak to Mr. MacDonald or Ms. Brown.
With a new school year underway, the Loran Scholars Foundation is beginning its search for the 28th class of Loran Scholars. We are deeply grateful for your participation, helping us discover students who are dedicated to serving others, show promise of leadership and have integrity, courage, compassion, grit and a high level of personal autonomy.
Grade 12 students may apply now at apply.loranscholar.ca. They may also view the application overview and a sample application form. As in previous years, they will need to submit a transcript, request a reference from a teacher or community member and have their school sponsorship confirmed (if applicable) before the deadline.
October 19th is the deadline for school-sponsored applications, and each high school may sponsor up to three students. Additional students may submit direct pool applications (without sponsorship) by October 26th.
Eligibility Criteria for High School Students
- Be in your final year of uninterrupted full-time studies in high school.
- Present a minimum cumulative average of 85%.
- Hold Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.
- Be at least 16 years of age by September 1st of the following year.
If you are currently undertaking a gap year for academic pursuits or community service-based activities, after uninterrupted full-time studies, you may still be eligible and should apply to the direct pool.
